Butterflies being released every day at 12 p.m.

September 1st, 2021

The Monarch butterfly chrysalises were all adopted by Dawson teams and employees, including a few first-timers. As of today, 93 have been tagged and released in the Peace Garden.

Come enjoy a wonderful moment with the butterflies every day at the Peace Garden (near Sherbrooke and Wood corner of the campus) at 12 p.m. Many of the remaining chrysalises are quite advanced- so make a plan to see them this Thursday or Friday.

Explore your commuting options

August 18th, 2021

Coming back to Dawson has many employees reconsidering their transport choices. Facilities Management and the Sustainability Office are teaming up to help you explore your possibilities!

The STM has worked very hard on ensuring that their vehicles are sanitized and public health rules respected.

Why not consider a “transport cocktail,” combining modes of transport to reach your destination? For example, drive to the train, train in from the West Island, a BIXI bike ride from Vendome to Dawson.

Did the shutdown gave you a new one exercise habit? Active transport could be your way of saving time and maintaining your form. Bicycling (all or part of the way) might be more feasible than you think. Check out Biking at Dawson for ideas and promotions.

To encourage you to try bicycling, on top of a discount for BIXI memberships, Dawson has a limited supply of free one-month trial BIXI memberships available for those coming back to work.

Get in touch with Richard Dugas of Facilities Management to get a code or for more tips on getting to Dawson in COVID times by other means than a car! We will be holding a contest to promote biking to Dawson, stay tuned!

Art sale benefitting Peace Garden

May 18th, 2021

Until the end of May, you can purchase an original artwork by a Dawson student or employee. All proceeds benefit the Peace Garden.

The goal of the Peace Garden is to create a green space that is both commemorative and symbolic of life and renewal, while making a positive environmental impact.

The Peace Garden grows a variety of native flowers and shrubs, and has pathways built in the shape of infinity loops, circular and flowing, that not only beautifies the grounds, but benefit local wildlife.

Interactive website helps you identify bird songs

May 18th, 2021

With many of us spending time at home, it can be a peaceful activity to observe which birds are dropping by our backyards and windows.

Perhaps you are wondering about the birds you hear as well.

There is a great website that features an illustration of many common birds in our area. You can click on a bird and hear its song as well as see its name.

Two of the birds you can hear are the Wood Thrush and the Chestnut-sided Warbler, featured in Stéphanie Aubin's Illustration class artwork, which we featured in the last D News.

These two birds, which overwinter in Nicaragua, where Dawson is planting trees to offset our carbon footprint, are supposed to be returning to Montreal around this time of year.

John F. Kennedy High School partnering with Dawson to be a Living School

May 4th, 2021

John F. Kennedy High School has just signed an agreement with the Sustainability Office at Dawson College to be a Living School.

A number of schools have already adopted the Living School approach with Dawson and this is the first school in the English Montreal School Board.

They will be planting fruit trees, growing vegetables and implementing composting and recycling among other projects. In addition, they will develop a climate action plan.

Attributes of a Living School can be found here: https://www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/sustainable/wp-content/uploads/sites/175/Living-Schools-Attributes-Chart-2018_JUNE-20-1.pdf

When the health situation permits, tours will resume of Dawson’s Living Campus for elementary and high schools. More info to come!

Earth Week report

May 4th, 2021

The Sustainability Office, in collaboration with departments at Dawson, enjoyed hosting two weeks of Earth Week events from April 19-30, 2021.

Events included:

  • Spring beehive opening
  • Climate action panel
  • Environmental racism
  • Eco-anxiety short plays
  • Well-being hobbies
  • Bike workshop
  • Illustration project showcase
  • Dawson hidden world tour
  • and many more!

Although our in-person plans had to be adapted, we were still able to touch on all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our 20 presentations and events attracted close to 400 participants both within the Dawson community and externally.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions we could not have gatherings, therefore, Sustainability Office staff and interns planted 300+ vegetable and herb seedlings and recorded the Spring beehive opening.

We want to thank the Earth Week planning committee, Dawson faculty, support staff and students who led activities throughout the weeks. Although Earth Week is done, we encourage everyone to continue the conversations and raising awareness on all the issues discussed.

Please support our local eco-friendly vendors by shopping here!

You can also purchase donated student Artwork: https://www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/sustainable/wp-content/uploads/sites/175/Student-Earth-Week-Art-Sale2.pdf

All funds raised will go towards the Peace Garden fund of the Dawson College Foundation.

Both links will be accessible throughout the month of May - great ideas for Mother’s Day gifts!
