Join us for Dawson’s first ever Certificate Day on Nov. 10

November 3rd, 2021

Certificates offer students from all programs the opportunities to interact in a learning community of fellow students and teachers who share a passion for thinking about and finding solutions to a specific contemporary issue. Students currently can take along with their DEC a certificate in Women/Gender Studies, Hellenic Studies, Peace Studies, Decolonization and Indigenization, and as of this year, SPACE: Arts and Sciences and Environment and Sustainability.

Interested in learning more about any of these certificates? Wondering about how to get more involved or the possibilities for co-teaching a certificate course with a colleague? If so, we invite you drop by the Lower and Upper Atriums on Wednesday, Nov. 10 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

For more information, please contact LC Certificate Lead Pat Romano at promano@dawsoncollege.qc.ca.

Academic Dean: Opening the door to dialogue

November 3rd, 2021

I have had the opportunity to speak with some 20 faculty and staff in recent weeks at two meet-and-greets. These occasions have provided exciting and welcome opportunities to re-connect with the Dawson community. Before I go into further detail about these events, it might be useful to introduce myself, how I first came to Dawson…

Excerpt:  These concerns have led us to reflect repeatedly on how we can frame these discussions in ways that can effectively engage at least a significant majority of our students in a real exploration of these divisive issues – one that may be uncomfortable and indeed take them into places where they would rather not go. In the next section you will find a brief overview of some of the conclusions we have drawn as we have discussed the difficulties and successes we have had in the classroom and mulled over the insights offered by the theory of nonviolence – its call for us to find connections across divides, its promotion of a process of social change that engages us intellectually, emotionally and creatively, and its emphasis that changes in our hearts and minds become most likely during moments where the unexpected happens.

Over 160 Dawsonites attended Dr. Saul Carliner’s plenary address to kick-off Dawson’s Ped Day on Oct. 15. New partnership with AI Launch Lab

October 13th, 2021

DawsonAI is thrilled to announce a new partnership with AI Launch Lab. Dawson students have a chance to learn AI through this partnership.

AI Launch Lab organized a series of workshops where college students receive hands-on training and mentorship in AI topics. They are working on projects ranging from robotics to natural language processing and computer vision, to sustainability and development, and more.

DawsonAI received applications from 65 Dawson students. The first cohort began on Sept. 25.

There will be other opportunities for Dawson students in Winter and Summer 2022.

One of the goals is to explore ways of connecting this student enrichment experience with program curriculum across disciplines as the partnership evolves.

If you are anything like us at the Research Office, you might be wondering what had happened to the semester. Learning at the Living Campus

October 13th, 2021

Last Thursday, first-year Environmental Science students in Brian Mader's General Biology I class were given the task of comparing the biodiversity of bacteria on two different surfaces. Students decided to head to the rooftop to compare the potential bacteria found in our two rooftop ponds. They compared soil samples with others on campus as well as sampled the surface of leaves. Results will be analyzed in a few weeks.

This is an example of learning outside the classroom on our Living Campus. If you would like to share your own experiences or those of your students, please write to cparsons@dawsoncollege.qc.ca
