  • Available Workshops

    You need to choose at least ONE workshop.

  • “Foundations” Series

  • Presenter: Karina Leonard, Office of Academic Development
    Duration: 1 hour
    Description:
    This one hour workshop offers participants the opportunity to deconstruct a sample course outline through the lens of competency-based education and the program approach. More specifically, at the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

    • understand the differences between competency-based vs content-based teaching;
    • clearly link course design to the course competency/ies;
    • situate their course as a part of a program;

    The October 3rd workshop is geared towards early-career faculty who would like a clear overview of the particularities of college-level teaching.

    The October 9th workshop will be tailored to all faculty interested in revisiting the program approach, for example in response to a program revision or implementation.

  • “Student-Centered Teaching” Series

  • Presenter: Josée Garceau (Historian, author, researcher, and consultant on generational differences)
    Duration: 1h 30m
    Room: 4C.1
    Description:
    Now that education professionals have made every effort to understand and adapt to Generation Y students, there is a new generation of students with expectations and behaviors different from those of their predecessors. Having grown up in a technological and hyper-connected environment, influenced by social networks and the online world, these students arrive with different world-views and values than those of the teachers who accompany them. We will compare the two generations of students in our learning environments; explain the impact of ubiquitous technologies on human relationships; examine the effects on in-person communication skills; understanding the development of identity and other elements that have an impact on learning. A comparison of teacher and student expectations will help us to identify possible solutions that promote constructive teacher-student interactions.

  • “Assessment” Series

  • Presenter: Dawson Active Learning Teachers
    Duration: 1h 15m
    Room: 3F.38

    Description:
    Looking for ways to “take the pulse” of what is going on in your classroom? Would you like ideas about how to quickly check the effectiveness of a lesson, get a feel for student understanding of a concept, get direct feedback about an activity, or gauge student ability or skill?

    The Dawson Active Learning Community is partnering with the Office of Academic Development to showcase several options for classroom assessment techniques (CATs). Several different modalities that employ varying levels of involvement/technological abilities will be explored in a fun, interactive style workshop.

    This session is intended for teachers just starting out with Active Learning - whether you're in an AL classroom or not.

    It is part of the regular 'Active Strategies that Work' meetings that are being held on the 2nd Friday of each month in Fall 2019.

  • “Dawson Initiatives” Series

  • Presenter: Karina Leonard, Office of Academic Development
    Duration: 1h 30m
    Description:
    This 1.5 hour workshop introduces some of the Living Campus learning projects that take place or have taken place at Dawson and beyond. We will explore how we can use nature as a lens through which to teach our course competencies, and ways that we can use the values of the living campus to inform our practice. Participants will be invited to use sustainability tools as a springboard to brainstorm how they might “live the learning” in their own courses.
    Room 3F.43 CoLab

Note

We understand that the timing of some of these workshops may conflict with scheduled classes or College obligations of faculty interested in them. As we cannot have faculty cancel or miss their classes, departmental meetings, etc. to attend, please let us know of your interest in the workshops that conflict with your Dawson obligations, by contacting us at OAD@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. We will do our best to organize other sessions of popular workshops over the coming year that would fit your teaching schedule.
